ALL ABOUT ZEBRA FINCHES

ZEBRA FINCHES  :

Zebra finches are the most popular finch species due to its availability and price. This cute, little striped finch has been kept in captivity for more than a 100 years.

NATIVE REGION

Zebra finches are originally from the arid areas of Central Australia, they can still be found in large flocks there. They can also be found in Indonesia and East Timor.

PERSNALITY & BEHAVIOUR

Most zebra finches will not want to be handled. They are not really “trainable” as a parrot type bird is. Occasionally you can find hand-raised finches, or you may have to hand-raise a baby yourself. In those cases you will have a finch that is bonded to people, and will happily perch on your shoulder or hand and be perfectly comfortable. Never try to force a finch to be “friendly” — this will likely terrify and stress the bird.

CARE & FEEDING

Zebra finches are excellent for beginners as they easily breed and have minimal care requirements, making them a low-maintenance choice. Since they are typically kept in pairs, they don't demand constant human interaction. Playing the radio in your absence and engaging with them when you're around is usually sufficient for their well-being.

Zebra finches' breeding tendencies make them a favorite among enthusiasts. Breeding is a straightforward process requiring a basket nest and nesting fiber. Typically, they commence breeding around 8 to 10 months of age. If you decide to breed them, it's crucial to provide occasional breaks to prevent exhaustion, particularly for the female, who expends significant energy in egg production. To support breeding pairs and their offspring, incorporate egg food, either store-bought or homemade, into their diet.

For optimal health, a zebra finch benefits from a pelleted base diet like Lafeber’s Premium Daily Diet for finches. Enhance their nutrition with fresh greens, vegetables, grubs, and a high-quality seed mix. As a delightful treat, consider offering Popcorn Nutri-Berries.

                                    SPEECH & SOUND

Male zebra finches are known for their lively singing, a behavior rarely observed in females. Their vocalizations are characterized by a variety of cheerful "peeping" and "beeping" sounds, resembling miniature car horns. While these feathered songsters can vocalize throughout the day when content, their calls are not deafeningly loud. Nevertheless, the persistence of their calls can be notable. If you position their enclosure outdoors or near a window with audible bird sounds, they often react to the calls of wild birds in the vicinity.

                                LIFE SPAN

In their natural habitat, wild zebra finches typically have a lifespan of 2 to 3 years. However, when kept as pets in a nurturing environment, these charming birds can enjoy a significantly extended life, ranging from 5 to 15 years.
